Grad is the Entrepreneur Behind Women's Online Boutique Line Dry

Hailing from Northwest Arkansas, Shelby Hulett attended Rogers Heritage High School prior to attending FIDM to study Visual Communications. “I thrived off of creative outlets, particularly fashion and design, which intrigued me at a young age,” Shelby said. “I did my research and favored the curriculum and lifestyle of what the FIDM Los Angeles campus had to offer. Once I considered it as a fitting option, there was no going back.” Since graduating in 2014, Shelby has worked in the apparel, hospitality, and marketing industries. Her entrepreneurial spirit was first ignited while working for a well-known online women’s boutique, and additional marketing experience, as well as the pandemic, influenced Shelby to take a leap and launch the online shop Line Dry. We caught up with the FIDM Grad to learn more.

Tell us about Line Dry and launching a brand: It was important to me to use my experiences, what caught my eye when I was seeking inspiration, my styling techniques, and what made me feel my most confident and beautiful to lay the foundation for the brand. I imagined a West Coast-inspired collection with a Southern charm flare, that ease of style, it needed to be effortless. I hand-picked looks for the Launch Collection with the intention of wanting flowy silhouettes, fabrics that felt good to the touch, and neutral colors that would complement all. I wanted it to be easy to mix and match Line Dry items with one's existing wardrobe. Through Line Dry’s creative platforms, I hope to encourage and inspire customers, fashion goers, and curious hearts to truly love the look they live in.

How did FIDM help prepare you for entrepreneurship? FIDM opened my eyes to what was really possible with a career in the industry. I admired how my instructors were truly in or had come from the industry themselves. We were receiving insights, tips, and tricks from people who had years of experience under their belts. Coming from Arkansas, FIDM allowed me to view the fashion industry and its operations in a way that wasn’t overwhelming or unreachable.

What advice would you share with a current FIDM Student wanting to break into the industry? If you lead with your heart and passion, you will pave your own way and find the right direction to help get you there. Nothing is too much, too bold, or too out of reach if it’s a dream planted in your heart — it’s there for a reason, now go chase it! The greatest thing I did was to position myself in a few different industries so that I could take a handful of learnings from each and use it to my advantage and for knowledge. So, intern, apply to a position in the industry, and then another and another. There’s a reason for every chapter along the way. Welcome growth, always.
