Online Learning Grad is In-Store Marketing Coordinator for GNC

In 2017, Jordan McGee graduated from FIDM’s Merchandising & Marketing program, which she pursued online while working in visuals for American Eagle at their corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. That same year, she was hired by General Nutrition Centers, Inc. (GNC) as an In-Store Marketing Coordinator. We chatted with Jordan about her current role, why she chose online learning, and the advice she’d share for current students.

Tell us a little about yourself: I like to consider myself a creative and active person. I’m always searching for ways to express my creativity, whether it’s drawing, painting, gardening, designing spaces in my home, or through clothing.

Tell us about your current position and responsibilities: My responsibilities include working with internal teams (merchants, store ops, international, etc.) and external teams (third party printers and wholesale partners) to gather all necessary creative and background information and new and recurring projects for GNC in-store marketing. After “kick off” with our creative team, I review and make editing suggestions until the piece is ready for print and distribution.

Why did you choose FIDM? After a few months of research, I chose FIDM because I found it to be the best school to learn more about the retail industry and merchandising.

What went into your decision to enroll in FIDM's online learning program? I was in my mid-twenties working at American Eagle’s corporate office and the FIDM’s online learning program seemed like the perfect fit for me to learn more while still working at AE.

Tell us about your online learning experience: The best part for me, aside from the interesting things I learned, was working with all different kinds of people across the country. I made some pretty good friends through the process who helped me and vice versa through the program.

Any advice for current FIDM Students who are experiencing online classes for the first time? Be organized! And really discuss your options with your advisor like internships and your best course of action to be as successful as you can in getting your desired job.

What is your biggest goal right now? To learn as much as I can and find my I fit in the retail world that will really push me to my full potential.

Anything else you’d like to share? Keep in mind that your success depends on your ability to work hard and to keep learning and evolving.

FIDM has been offering eLearning courses and entire majors online for over 15 years. We’ve been able to build on that foundation to deliver a true FIDM experience for our students currently experiencing an online-only quarter. FIDM's holistic approach focuses on academics, research, student activities, and career planning. Please contact FIDM Admissions to apply.
