Student Becky Dee Interns For Emmy Award Nominee Production Designer James Pearse Connelly

Becky Dee is earning her A.A. degree in Visual Communications and Entertainment Set Design and Decoration (ESDD). She is currently interning for James Pearse Connelly, Emmy award nominated production designer for NBC’s The Voice, who recently guest lectured in Becky’s Art Direction class on the Los Angeles campus. We caught up with her to find out more.

Tell us a little about yourself: I am born and raised in Los Angeles. I love escaping into films and television series.  I am an adventurer who loves to travel and see the world, I was able to spend a semester in London(one of my favorite cities) during my time at CU Boulder where I got a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology.

What was the best part of the guest lecture from James Pearse Connelly and Lydia Smyth? The best part of the guest lecture from James Pearse Connelly and Lydia Smyth is understanding the logic and hard work that goes into production designing and art directing.  Specifically, understanding their design processes and how they go about each project was fascinating to me and helped me to understand the industry even more.

Tell us about your internship with James Pearse Connelly: The exposure to the industry that I have gotten and will get is eye opening and a privilege.

What attracts you to study and pursue ESDD, and why FIDM? I have always been interested in entertainment and mainly set decorating. I want to help create a world for audiences to escape to while watching films or television. I chose FIDM because of all of the amazing connections that they have to offer during school and post graduation.

What are your career goals and how is FIDM helping you get there? I want to be a set decorator for scripted films or television. FIDM is helping me get there by offering such an amazing program like ESDD and the connections that I have been able to make through it.
