U.S. Navy Veteran Robin Cote Studying Digital Cinema

Robin Cote, a Veteran in the U.S. Navy, is studying Digital Cinema on the Los Angeles campus. Originally from Saskatchewan, Canada, Robin has plans to launch an online magazine—an indigenous focused high fashion and entertainment publication. We caught up with her to find out more.

What are your career goals? I've always dreamed of becoming a celebrity fashion stylist. I grew up in a place where resources were limited to the type of work that I wanted to do, but I've always had a passion for fashion. Being at FIDM has helped me hone my talents and taught me how to better market myself as an artist. It has opened my mind up to all the possibilities. I am also moving towards launching my own online magazine, an indigenous focused high fashion and entertainment publication.

Within the past few months my dream of becoming a celebrity fashion stylist have come to fruition! I’ve been published several times in Vulkan Magazine for styling a male pop group, “Forever In Your Mind,” as well as assisted styling for Disney actress Meg Donnelly. Also, just last week I was part of the hair and makeup team for a music video for another pop star. I signed a NDA so I can't reveal her name until the video is released! It hasn’t always been easy but at the end of the day, I know I’m doing what I love. ❤️

What went into your decision to apply to FIDM? I've always wanted to attend a fashion school. I applied to FIDM because it is an accredited post secondary institution of higher learning within the design industry. I'm a firm believer that if you want to be the best, you should learn from the best.

Tell us about a connection you’ve made at FIDM that is helping you in your career? I have to give credit to all the instructors I've had—they have all taught me something different and essential to my growth as an artist and I value the knowledge they share.

What advice do you have for a Veteran thinking about going to FIDM? FIDM is a wonderful school with an awesome pool of resources as well as a strong network of Veterans who know and support one another. Don't be afraid to reach out! Also, Patti Martinez who is the VA Education Benefits Coordinator is absolutely amazing! She really cares for the Veterans at FIDM and always has our best interests at heart.
