B.A. in Design Grad is a Fashion Specialist at Amazon

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Catherine Hayes attended Cypress Spring High School before moving to Los Angeles to study at FIDM. Since graduating with a B.A. in Design in 2018, she has worked in fashion public relations, as a buyer, and most recently is a Fashion Specialist at Amazon. In her role, Catherine has worked on the first Amazon Style brick-and-mortar store that’s opening later this year at Americana at Brand in Glendale, California. We caught up with the FIDM Grad to learn more.

Tell us about your position at Amazon: I work closely with our internal stakeholders to help them launch new products and features while supporting them throughout the entire lifecycle. We provide high-quality, human-annotated services to support Amazon Fashion initiatives such as Outfit Recommendations and Automated Collections on Detail Page, and “Alexa, what should I wear?” responses.

What can people expect from the new Amazon Style store that's opening later this year? A digital shopping experience that will make shopping in retail stores seamless.

How did FIDM help prepare you for your career? FIDM prepared me in so many ways, from trend forecasting classes to a B.A. course on inventing products for people with health issues/disabilities. Those courses made me well-rounded in the fashion Industry.

How has FIDM’s Career Center helped you? I'm always calling FIDM once a week to speak with my Career Advisor Simona Williams, who has always been an amazing advisor to me, from a freshman to an alumni. She has always got me jobs, even if I was not in Los Angeles, and always looked out for me in ways that I'm so thankful for.
