Design Student Receives California Fashion Foundation Scholarship Award

Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Danijela Vasic always knew she wanted to move to California. “I have family here, so I always felt like it was a second home,” she said. “I decided on FIDM because not only did I love the fact where it was located, but I was obsessed with the idea of how FIDM is a fashion-based school that teaches different aspects of the industry — and even life.” After earning an A.A. in Fashion Design, Danijela continued her education in the Design B.A. program. Danijela, who recently received the California Fashion Foundation (CFF) Award, shares her FIDM journey.

What led you to continue your studies at FIDM after earning a Fashion Design A.A? Doing the B.A program was everything I wanted; it was a perfect mix of art and design. I always knew I wanted to continue my studies at FIDM. Going to FIDM was the first time in my life I felt like I enjoyed school and was actually good at what I was doing. That feeling definitely was the reason why I continued my studies, and of course having wonderful supportive professors.

Any favorite lessons or classes so far? I really enjoyed my art history classes and even painting class, but one class that really stood out for me was my studio class with Shaun Samson. I always knew the direction I wanted to go was lingerie, but I was a little scared to fully express myself. I would always tell Shaun I was worried what others would think of me and my designs, but Shaun always told me to not care what others think of you and your designs. Shaun definitely pushed me to be my best version of my future designer self.

Tell us about the scholarship you recently won: I am super excited to announce I won the 2022 California Fashion Foundation (CFF) Scholarship Award. When I submitted my application I was not sure what to expect. I was thankful to have an opportunity like this. I was very shocked and read the email a couple of times because I was in disbelief.

What are your ultimate career goals? My ultimate career goal is to work for Savage X Fenty and one day move to New York to work for Victoria’s Secret. I want to be part of a company that shows different types of beauty and makes everyone feel empowered.
