Alumna Soo Kim Launches Beauty Brand Puredrop

A graduate of Beauty Industry Management, Soo Kim is the Founder and CEO of Puredrop and just put her first product on the market, Vitamin Shower Filter, designed to aid in skincare. We caught up with the beauty entrepreneur to learn more.

Tell us a little about yourself and what inspired you to start Puredrop: My family and I moved to California when I was in middle school. I’ve always been so passionate about beauty. I am always researching and trying new makeup, fashion, and shoes—and my mom was a little worried because I was so obsessed with beauty.

When I came to the United States I was experiencing bad acne and skin trouble, and it stressed me out. I tried a lot of different products to get rid of my skin troubles and spent a lot of money on skincare clinics. I couldn’t get rid of it, but I knew the importance of a daily routine.

One day I read an article about shower water. It said shower water contains chlorine and lime which leads to skin trouble and it may lead to atopy. I did some research and discovered shower filters, and I decided to make a brand. I added Vitamin C to the shower filter, which aids in skin care, and shared my experience with others.

I consider my Vitamin Shower Filter as a skincare and hair care product that everyone needs to use for their skin and hair.

Tell us more about Puredrop: Puredrop Vitamin Shower Filter is an easy-to-install shower filter that neutralizes chlorine and removes waste, like rust and water soluble heavy metal, from your shower water. This reduces build up in and around your bath faucets and leaves you with cleaner, healthier rinse after each shower. The filter contains Vitamin C, milk powder, and natural glycerin for your skin, and aromatherapy scents in many options.

Why did you choose FIDM? I choose FIDM because I knew FIDM has an amazing career network that links students with job opportunities and internships; the teachers are industry professionals; and the location is situated right in the middle of the Fashion District. I always had my mind that I want to have my own business and I knew that FIDM was school that I can fulfill my dream.

How do you feel FIDM prepared you for what you are doing now? At FIDM I learned about marketing, beauty ingredients, and packaging, and how to make a business plan. Those things that I learned help me a lot when I started my business. I don’t think I would have had this chance to learn these things at another school.

How did you decide on your major? I chose my major because none of the other schools had a major in Beauty Marketing. When I first heard about the major, I knew it was for me; I love the beauty industry and wanted to be in it and learn everything about it.

Any advice for current FIDM Students? I just want to say that please plan your life in 5 years and 10 years term. You need to know what you want, and you need to be consistent. Life doesn’t always turn out the way you plan and that is natural however, I think it is important to become a person who learns from experience and thinks of it in a positive way. The other advice that I want to give is “utilize your time.” Time is money that God gives to everyone. Be active and try things and make mistakes. Live every day like it’s two days.

What is your biggest goal right now? My biggest goal is for Vitamin Shower Filter to become a product that everyone uses, like toner and lotion.
