U.S. Navy Veteran Anna Harvey Studying Film & TV Costume Design

Anna Harvey is in the U.S. Navy as a Master at Arms. She is currently studying Film & TV Costume Design on the Los Angeles campus.

What went into your decision to apply to FIDM? I've always been involved with art whether its painting, drawing, sewing or theater. Alexander McQueen was the designer that changed my perspective on what fashion could be and made my interest in the fashion world grow. I decided to study Film and TV Costume Design because I enjoy designing different styles and love how costumes can tell different stories for different characters.

What are your career goals and how is FIDM helping you get there? To be a costume designer on a Wes Anderson film. He has always been a director I very much admire. I love how him and his crew can transport you into this other universe and tell a story like no one else can.

What do you love about FIDM? When I visited FIDM's campus I was very impressed with the faculty, the students work and the amount of resources available.

Tell us about a connection you’ve made through or at FIDM that are helping you in your career? I actually got a job as a PA for a U.S. Olympics and United Airlines commercial just from what started off as a conversation about cars and motorcycles with a FIDM employee. When she found out I'm pursuing a career in Film and TV Costumes she recommended me to a costume designer she knows. It was supposed to just be an internship but then he hired me the first day. It was a great experience that I would have never had if I didn't go to this school.

What advice do you have for a Veteran thinking about going to FIDM? I would suggest joining the Student Veterans of America at FIDM to help connect them with other veterans because I know how hard the transition can be to go back into the civilian world. It's also a great group to learn about other resources available for Veterans. Patty Martinez has also been a tremendous help to me and every other Veteran I've spoken to that has contacted her, she's the VA Education Benefits Coordinator and always goes above and beyond for Veterans.
