La La Land Costume Designer Speaks at FIDM

La La Land Costume Designer Speaks at FIDM

Oscar-nominated costume designer Mary Zophres and choreographer Mandy Moore visited the downtown campus Wednesday night to discuss their work on La La Land. Speaking in a student lounge packed with students and faculty, the women first answered questions from host Scott Mantz of Access Hollywood and then turned to the audience to share stories. In what sounded like a dream creative collaboration with director Damien Chazelle, Zophres said that her inspiration for the iconic floaty yellow dress that Emma Stone wears in the key dance sequence came from a combination of 40s musicals and vintage fashion magazines. She also remembered seeing photos of Stone looking gorgeous in yellow Versace, the perfect color to pop against a midnight blue sky. The fabric was switched from the original crepe to a poly-jersey for pure movie magic.
