Entrepreneur and Army Reserve Veteran is Studying Merchandising & Marketing at FIDM

Born in Downey, California and raised in Marianna, Arkansas, Merchandising & Marketing Student Shantelle Evans enlisted in the Army Reserve at age 17, and left for boot camp upon graduating from high school. After serving for nine years and becoming a licensed esthetician, she enrolled at FIDM to take her entrepreneurial career to the next level.

What made you want to study at FIDM? I am very passionate about business and wanted to attend a school that would help me understand business more in-depth and I could pair with other pieces of education I obtain.

Tell us about your military service. My job was a cargo specialist, which included the planning, organizing, and transporting equipment necessary for jobs for all Army soldiers. I was deployed once to Kuwait and reached a rank of sergeant. After serving nine years, I finished my contract and got out of the Army to take a break, but I’m now considering going back into the Reserve to complete a retirement.

We heard you're involved in community outreach and volunteer work. I’m the founder of a community service group in Riverside, California called The Violet Daisy Project. It’s a project-based organization that focuses on making a positive impact on young girls and women of all ages. We do things such as take donations for the homeless and or single mothers who are in need and give back to those individuals. Recently, I spoke on a career panel for a youth conference where myself and other female leaders spoke to young women in high school about career paths and our journeys.

Are you involved with Student Veterans of America (SVA) at FIDM? I am a returning student so I am now getting to learn more about SVA. I am looking into becoming a lot more involved.

What are your ultimate career goals? To be a multi-business owner and for The Violet Daisy Project to reach official non-profit status so we can reach women and young girls on a much broader scale. Prior to returning to FIDM, I attended esthetician school and received my license. Since then, I've been able to establish my business, DVN SKN (Divine Skin), where I provide services such as eyelash extensions, facials, waxing, makeup, and body scrubs.

Keep up with Shantelle on Instagram @dvnskn.
