FIDM Instructor Ziyan Tan Creates Concept Illo for Salvador Perez Dress Designed for Mindy Kaling

FIDM Instructor Ziyan Tan recently created the concept illustration for the dress Salvador Perez designed for Mindy Kaling to wear as host of this year’s Costume Designers Guild Awards. Ziyan first worked with Salvador Perez on Goosebumps 2. Jacqueline Saint Anne met the concept illustrator through the Costume Designers Guild and has brought her on as a new instructor in the Film & TV Costume Design program to teach Costume Illustration. We caught up with the ZBrush artist to learn more.

What are your current projects? I had the honor of working on James Wan's upcoming film Malignant. I created rendered illustrations that were shown to the director. The rendered illustrations were atmospheric and were a way to showcase the character and the costume from many angles; they were done in ZBrush and Photoshop. I also drew flat line illustrations for those costumes.

What exciting changes do you see on the horizon in your discipline? I'm excited to see how much illustrators will be able to combine traditional and digital tools to create new, innovative works of art. I think it's amazing to see illustrators with good foundational skills really branch out into the digital world.

What classes at FIDM do you teach? I teach Costume Illustration for Film and TV II at FIDM.

Describe your teaching philosophy: I believe that as a teacher, it is just as important to show my students that they are learning not only for the sake of school and work but also because it is fun to gain new knowledge and utilize the information that they are given - especially in the realm of art! I am giving them the tools to create, and I hope that they take those tools and find creative new ways to apply their knowledge to their industries.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at FIDM? I love seeing how passionate my students are about what they do and how talented and hardworking they are as well. I also admire the amazing range of talent in our faculty and staff.

What inspires you? I am inspired by the fact that art is all around us, even in the smallest things. There is so much art in nature and in the world - from the patterns that shadows create to the pops of color in a bush of flowers. I try to take my inspiration and apply it to my work. In my opinion, the ultimate goal of creating art is to improve the quality of people's lives!
