DEBUT Grad Spotlighted by Christopher Kane

A design by Advanced Fashion Design Graduate Francesca Lake, who showed her collection at DEBUT 2016, was featured in Women’s Wear Daily last week in a story on Christopher Kane’s media showcase Platform, which spotlights young Black creatives and other ethnic minorities in the fashion community. Platform began as a partnership between the London-based designer and Fashion Journalism and Fashion Communication and Promotion students Central Saint Martins last year. Lake recently completed a Graduate Diploma in Fashion from the famed British college, of which Kane is an alumnus.

According to WWD, the third and latest issue of the online zine Platform, titled “Resilience,” has gone national in the U.K. and now includes work from other universities throughout the country with Kane using his large social media presence to amplify the work of young creatives. In addition to highlighting a design from the FIDM Alumna’s Church and the Dancehall collection, Kane features the work of fashion photographers, filmmakers, knitwear specialists, stylists, and weavers, among others on his Instagram.

Lake, who was born in London, England and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, focuses on celebrating untapped stories of her culture in fashion. “Church and the Dancehall are the two opposing cornerstones of Jamaican culture and are representation of the duality of conservatism and rebellious liberation in Jamaican culture,” Lake wrote of her latest work. “This project is both an exploration of self and culture and serves as a celebration of the blending of both and what makes us as Jamaicans who we are.”
