Alumnus's Sustainable Brand Featured in Robb Report

San Diego native Tristan Detwiler studied Fashion Design at FIDM after completing a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design from University of Southern California. The artist, model, and surfer is the Founder of Stan, a Los Angeles-based clothing brand of unique pieces crafted from antique textiles found around the world. The label, which prides itself on detail-oriented techniques such as quilting and appliqué, was recently featured in Robb Report. 

"As fashion brands adapt to an uncertain future, Tristan’s inherently sustainable mission is to breathe life into vintage or antique textiles, upscaling them into eccentric, one-of-a-kind jackets hand-made in LA," writes Robb Report. "The result is a sort of material legacy, a wabi-sabi reworking of otherwise forgotten remnants. Did we mention that each jacket is outrageously fun, too?"

Once Tristan becomes inspired by a unique fabric or garment, his team puts in hours of work using vintage mending, quilting, and appliqué to create the singular styles. “We try to marry sustainability and storytelling,” he told Robb Report. A waxed canvas jacket with railroad stripes and vintage Japanese kimono cotton retails for $750, while a jacket made from a 1930s variant of the log cabin pineapple quilt sells for $1,350.

“Each fabric bears the mark of the past. Some have been gifted, tattered and passed down over generations,” Tristan added. “Now I’m creating this piece that allows another person to continue and share this story, but in a different form.” While best known for his boho-surf luxury jackets, he also designs shirts and pants, as well as select pieces for women.
