Sara Caldwell

Freelance writer/producer Sara Caldwell’s clients include Discovery Channel, BBC, and DirectTV. A member of Writers Guild of America, Sarah is the author of three entertainment industry books and has tackled subjects as varied as nursing care, information literacy, and fake news in her personal work. She is hired on independent films, as a producer, associate producer, assistant director, and other crew positions.

Describe a favorite class project:
One of my favorite class projects is having students work in marketing teams in Business of Film. Students come up with highly creative posters and proposals, talent wish lists, timed pitch sessions, and other materials to present their concepts in a fun, competitive, and constructive environment.

Do you have a particular style or philosophy about teaching?
I believe that best teaching practices come from a place of kindness and respect, and recognizing individuality. Every student is unique and not all learn at the same pace. My goal is to find areas where every student can shine, no matter what their ability. I believe this helps give them the confidence to speak out and push themselves in other areas.

Do you have a favorite memory teaching at FIDM?
One of my favorite teaching moments at FIDM was in a documentary class – a student chose to focus his project on ‘wiener dog’ races. Whenever he showed his footage, we all laughed hysterically, the dogs were so cute and funny.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at FIDM?
I really enjoy the class sizes at FIDM, and getting to know each student individually. Students in smaller classes tend to show much more confidence and join more willingly in our group discussions.
