Instructor Has M.S. in Education from Mount St. Marys College

General Studies instructor, Joan Rotunno, has a M.S. in Education from Mount St. Mary’s College and was a teacher in the Los Angeles city school system. A faculty member at FIDM for more than 30 years, she also served as a docent course developer and trainer for the Los Angeles County court system.

Describe a favorite class project:
One of my favorite class projects is the Debate for Critical Thinking. It is in place of a final exam, and students get to choose their own partner. We brainstorm debate topics as a class, and they choose their own topic. The oral debate is graded by their classmates, and many times they are more critical than I am. They are always interesting, and besides researching a topic they are interested in, and speaking persuasively on it, they are gaining skills for evaluating others.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at FIDM?
I have been teaching at FIDM for over thirty years, and the reason I have stayed is that it is rarely boring. FIDM students tend to be creative, and they think outside of the box. They have opinions that are worth listening to, and I find them very rewarding as students. Also, their outfits are also never boring!

Joan Rotunno is an Outstanding Faculty Award Winner, an award given by the student body to outstanding faculty members.
