Instructor Was Director of Social Media at Josie Maran Cosmetics

Social media and influencer outreach consultant, Taryn Aronson has been bringing brands to life for a decade. Her career has included being the Director of Social Media and Public Relations for Josie Maran Cosmetics and Sensa Products, and Development Manager for Too Faced, Smashbox, and Urban Decay Cosmetics. She teaches in Beauty Marketing & Product Development.

How did you get into the growing field of social media?
Getting into social media was a total accident. My background was in product development and marketing for beauty brands and that was my life for eight years. In 2008, was doing product development and marketing for a skincare brand that was produced by a company that housed multiple internet brands. One day a VP approached me and casually asked me if I thought it was strange that they didn't have any social media pages for any of the in-house brands. I answered that I supposed it was a bit weird, and he asked me if I wanted to take it on.

What are you up to when not teaching at FIDM?
Most recently I was the Director of Social Media and Public Relations for Josie Maran Cosmetics. Last summer I decided to strike out on my own though, and I am currently an independent consultant offering social media marketing, community building, and influencer outreach strategy to a variety of beauty, fashion, wellness, and lifestyle brands in Los Angeles.

What is the best part of your job and why? The best part is making my own hours. I'm a night owl and always struggled with a traditional nine-to-five schedule. It's really freeing to be able to work when the mood strikes, even if its 1:00 a.m. and not worry about having to wake up early the next morning.

What is it like teaching at your alma mater? It's such an honor. I know that sounds cheesy, but it's true. I am really passionate about teaching and am so grateful to have the opportunity to give back. I know what students are up against (having been in their shoes 15 years ago) and have enjoyed a diverse career that I think allows me to give my classes a well-rounded view of what is possible post-graduation.
