Grad is Senior Technical Designer at ModCloth

Born and raised in El Monte, California, Patrick Pettinato’s grandmother taught him how to sew at a young age. “She was my inspiration to create something from nothing and make it my own,” said Patrick, who earned a degree in Merchandise Product Development from FIDM and has worked for brands such as Torrid, Alternative Apparel, and ModCloth. “I am heading into my twelfth year in this industry and I look back to where I've been and I do not regret a single thing. I continue to learn so much everyday about my craft and more so about myself.” We caught up with Patrick, who is currently a Senior Technical Designer, to hear more about his journey.

How did you come to FIDM? I found myself sitting in a classroom at Cal Poly Pomona sketching on the side of my notebook. This was a constant pastime of mine until I decided to take a chance and make it a career. I met with an adviser and expressed the desire to build garments as well as perfect the fit. I have always had a struggle fitting in the standardized shirtings and wanted to learn how to build something to fit my body.

What were some of the best lessons you learned at FIDM? Patternmaking! It was the most intriguing class I have ever taken. Building and manipulating patterns is a skill that I constantly use.

Tell us about your career path after graduation: After graduation I was fortunate to intern at Michael Stars. This was my first hands-on experience that opened doors for me to freelance for companies such as Torrid and Alternative Apparel. I then fell into specializing in dresses (casual and evening wear). I have worked in Private Label, Contemporary, Plus, Juniors, et cetera.

What are your responsibilities as Senior Technical Designer? My responsibilities are owning the fit from Proto to Top of Production stage. In Retrospec, I perfect the fit and execute desired aesthetic while maintaining the integrity of our brand standard and quality.

What do you love most about your position and why? The feedback and reviews. To hear from our customers that our garments give them confidence and make them feel special is such a reward. Also, working with the best team and boss in the industry.

How has the pandemic impacted your work life? The pandemic has presented its share of struggles. I have learned how to be creative with how I communicate not only with my team, but also with factories overseas. It has taught me to be more patient with the process as well as understanding that we are all in this together (also it's fun working in sweatpants).

What advice would you share with a FIDM Student or recent grad? As cliché as it sounds, never give up. We are heading into tough times. Companies are closing and jobs are being cut. Just work hard and keep on chasing your dreams and goals. Also, be kind and patient. We tend to lose that in such a fast-paced world. Always stay open to growth and find new ways to make the world a better place. Opportunities are endless as long as you have the drive to be amazing.
