MPD Student Marielle Lee To Pursue Ted Baker Internship After Study Tour

Merchandise Product Development Student Marielle Lee visited Ted Baker last week on the Behind The Scenes Industry Study Tour. She loves the brand so much, she is considering applying for one of their internships through the FIDM Career Center.

“It’s all about the details at Ted Baker,” she said. “That’s why I like them. We share the same design philosophy. Each garment is like a piece of art. You can spot a Ted Baker from afar—a dress and especially menswear.”

Marielle did her research on Ted Baker prior to the study tour. Living in Aliso Viejo, she has a two-hour train ride to the LA campus, so she utilizes her time doing research and studying. She said she’d love to work for a brand like Ted Baker when she graduates. She learned that the brand has over 300 retail locations, all uniquely designed to reflect the character of their location. She said, “They maintain their DNA and remain cohesive in terms of their marketing and visual design.”

Marielle has a 12-year-old daughter, Faith, who is a gymnast. When Marielle asked her if she would consider living in London, if she were to pursue a position at Ted Baker’s headquarters, her daughter just wanted to know whether or not London has any gymnastics programs. Marielle assured her they do. Marielle said even her daughter is drawn to the brand, pictured below in front of a Ted Baker window display.

Marielle moved to California from the Philippines to attend FIDM in August of 2017. She has two degrees—her Communications Art degree from University of Santo Tomas in Manila and her Fashion Marketing degree from Lasalle College International. And she is set to graduated from FIDM in mid-2019.

When she graduated from University of Santo Tomas, she went to work for Creatives Caffeine, an advertising agency, working with clients in the fashion industry such as accessories and denim brands. From there, she went to work for Kamiseta, the Philippines’ leading speciality retailer of fashionable casual apparel, doing media and PR.

She left Kamiseta to launch her own fashion line, Fitting Pretty. After a few twists and turns, she decided she wanted to go back to school to study product development, and applied to FIDM.

Her advice for FIDM students is to have grit. “There may be bad days, but don’t give up. At the end of the tunnel, there is a light.” Also, as someone who is returning to school in her late 30s, she wants to encourage older students to follow their dreams. “Age is just a number. Learning is an unending process. You always have to have an open mind and an open heart.”
