DEBUT Student Andrea Alarcon's Collection is Inspired by the Modern Woman Who Dresses For Herself

Southern California native and Advanced Study Fashion Design Student Andrea Alarcon has spent nine intensive months working on her DEBUT collection. We recently chatted with the designer to learn more about her designs, path to FIDM, and how she’s getting through this difficult moment in time.

Tell us about your DEBUT collection: “Conscious Clarity” is inspired by the modern woman today who dresses for herself. It’s functional and uncomplicated in an elegant way. I’ve taken fabrics such as wool gabardine, pleather, and a wide rib knit to redefine classic pieces in a new light. The high-slit pleather top with the wide-leg gabardine pant encompasses my brand and what it stands for. Together, it’s sensual and modern, but you can throw on the menswear-inspired wool coat and wear the outfit throughout your day.

What was your path to FIDM? Before attending FIDM, I was working my way towards my bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, but design was so ingrained into my life from such a young age that I decided to finally pursue it by going to FIDM to learn all the skills I needed to advance my career.

How is FIDM helping you get closer to your career goals? My hard work is what essentially got me to where I am today and I will continue to depend on my skills and tenacity to get me closer to my goals.

No one could have imagined a global pandemic would force DEBUT to be cancelled. How are you supporting one another or comforting yourself during this difficult time? It’s unfortunate as we all worked extremely hard to showcase our work at the show in April. The show will be rescheduled at a different time and that’s what we’re holding onto at the moment.

What do you hope people take away when seeing your designs? I hope they see a strong, confident woman.

FIDM regrets that, due to precautionary measures brought on by coronavirus, or COVID-19, we are canceling this year’s DEBUT and related events. In compliance with government recommendations, we are pursuing alternate methods of showcasing the amazing student work. We take the safety of our guests, students, staff, and faculty very seriously and thank you in advance for your understanding during this uncertain time.

Please follow us on Instagram for updates on how we are showcasing all of the student work from DEBUT.
