Grad is a Sales Associate at the SPL Group

Third-generation Angeleno Mason Segal (pictured with designs from FIDM) attended two different colleges prior to applying to FIDM, and finally found his perfect fit at the college, where he received an Associate of Arts degree in Merchandise Product Development and a Bachelor of Science in Apparel Technical Design in 2019. “I enjoyed sitting at the park at FIDM analyzing the technical aspects of what the students were wearing,” he recalled. “I also reflect fondly of my time spent in the six-hour sewing class, and after much frustration, seeing my ultimate vision come to fruition.”

Today, Mason’s working as a Sales Associate for the SPL Group, a New York-based shipping and logistics company that’s in the process of opening offices in Los Angeles. The company, founded in 2008, assists mid- to large-size companies with optimizing their parcel contracts and processes to reduce costs by utilizing proprietary software developed in Israel. Mason says that companies are always trying to cut costs in an effort to improve the bottom line. “That philosophy and discipline has not changed even during these times,” he said of working during a pandemic.

Mason also noted that FIDM helped him understand all aspects of the fashion industry, including the field of logistics in which he now works. “My education at FIDM gave me the confidence needed when talking to potential clients about the benefits of the SPL Group relating to the industry,” he said. “And obtaining a degree in Merchandise Product Development and Apparel Technical Design assisted me in the understanding of creating ethically-sourced apparel, which is a passion of mine."
