Denim Seminar Industry Defines Terms

Denim Fade Terminology was the subject of the first seminar in the 6-part LA lunchtime series on the Business of Denim. The hands-on informational class led by FIDM Instructor Tricia Edwards took students through a lively discussion on the special effects that turn the indigo textile into garments beloved by denimheads—and the terms used in the industry to describe them. An example? Want your designer jeans to fade in common areas like knees, thighs, and seams, but not uniformly? Then tell the factory you want "iro-ochi."

Edwards, who is developing the new denim major set to start in 2017, currently teaches in the Merchandise Product Development and IMPD programs. She worked in the industry in knitwear and menswear, including a stint at PacSun, and is a dedicated denimhead. Next Wednesday, she'll cover the basic denim fabrics and hand out swatches for students to keep. Free seminars are every Wednesday in August, 11:15 to noon, in the library conference room.
