Roberts Beauty Hires Alumna Morgan Kaptain for Business Development Position

Alumna Morgan Kaptain recently accepted a position in Business Development at Roberts Beauty, headquartered in Los Angeles. With clients including Stila Cosmetics, Smashbox, Urban Decay, Melt, Josie Maran, Halo Beauty, and Glo Skin Beauty, Roberts Beauty is a leading supplier in the cosmetics industry specializing in packaging and components. Morgan was the Director of Brand Development at Cosmetix West and an instructor at FIDM prior to taking this new position, and continues to mentor students in the beauty programs.

Tell us about your new position at Roberts Beauty: My new position is very exciting for me; I get to merge my love and obsession for both packaging and product. My role is focused on building new relationships with brands within the beauty industry to provide them with primary packaging and turnkey formulation services along with managing existing accounts.

Why is Los Angeles such a hot market for the beauty industry? Los Angeles is full of entrepreneurs. We see a lot of success in the new, emerging and e-commerce brands that are making movements in the beauty world. We also see many brands that are driving the force of clean beauty on the West Coast that believe in not only using a non-toxic product on your skin but taking care of yourself on the inside as well.

Any advice for current beauty students at FIDM? I have been mentoring students for almost 10 years now, much more so in the recent 6 years as an instructor in the Beauty Program and I love that my former students still come to me for career advice and guidance. It truly is the greatest gift and the most rewarding feeling. My biggest piece of advice to students is to take your classes seriously—this is a school that you will absolutely use everything you learn in class when you begin your careers. Know that you might need to start at the bottom and work your way up in a company and role but that is the greatest gift of all—learning from the ground up is essential to having expertise in what you do and taking that expertise with you as you move up in your career. You don’t just become a director—it must be earned. Starting as a customer service rep is going to give you the insight you need as you become and manager, a director or a VP. All of that knowledge plays a huge part in your overall success in your career. Take every job and role seriously—you never know who’s path you will cross again later, you want to make great impressions on your peers and superiors alike—from your time at FIDM to your professional career.

What is your biggest goal right now? My biggest goal is to be happy and successful. I LOVE this industry. I take a lot of pride, passion and ownership in what I do and I know that plays a large role in my overall achievements and goals.
