YMCA Partners with FIDM Scholarship Foundation to Give New Clothing Away to Local Community in Need

In the spirit of the season, the Anderson Munger Family YMCA in the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles gave away over 2000 never-worn sweaters, jeans, and coats to adults and teens in the surrounding community, made possible by a generous donation of apparel from the FIDM Scholarship Foundation. Three TV networks covered the event: NBC (4), ABC (7) and LA Cityview Channel 35 (affiliated with the City of Los Angeles and Mayor Garcetti's office).

The FIDM Scholarship Foundation gifted the Y over 4,381 units of new retail brand clothing with a value of over $173,000. The gift of cold weather clothing to the community is aimed at helping homeless and in need adults and teens stay warm during the winter months. The giveaway took place on December 17th from 9:30am to 11:30am on a first come, first serve basis.

“We are thrilled for this opportunity that FIDM Scholarship Foundation has generously provided for our community in Koreatown. Being on the front-lines early in the mornings during our food distribution days, I’ve seen first-hand warm clothing is direly needed by many individuals waiting outside for up to 2 hours for food,” said Rae Jin, Executive Director, Anderson Munger Family YMCA. “In addition, the warm clothing will be greatly appreciated by the unhoused whom we also serve through our shower hygiene program. A true gift for many people, especially during this unique holiday season. This wonderful partnership magnifies that Together, We Make Possible, Happen!”

The abundant clothing donation from the FIDM Scholarship Foundation ensures future giveaways in the coming months at additional YMCA-LA locations.

“At FIDM, we feel it is very important to give back to the communities that we serve. We work all year long collecting donations to help the less fortunate and provide low-cost clothing to the community, in our FIDM Scholarship Store," relates Ella Van Nort, Director, FIDM Scholarship Foundation. “We are very fortunate to partner with YMCA-LA on this meaningful initiative. This donation would not be possible without the incredible support from all the retailers and manufacturers, that support the FIDM Scholarship Foundation, with their donations."

The FIDM Scholarship Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping students achieve a college education at FIDM. Funding comes primarily from donations of merchandise from over 400 manufacturers, retailers, and wholesalers, typically in the form of clothing, accessories, fabric, cosmetics, and home furnishings. This merchandise is sold in the FIDM Scholarship Store and proceeds from store sales generate scholarships for current students. Thanks to merchandise donations, the FIDM Scholarship Foundation has awarded over $7 million in scholarships to deserving students since its inception. Upon graduating, these scholarship recipients have gone on to launch successful creative and business careers in the fashion, beauty, design, and entertainment industries.
