Justin Janda Visits Premier Merchandise Product Development Group

Menswear and Merchandise Product Development Grad Justin Janda visited FIDM recently to speak to the students in the Premier Merchandise Product Development Group. He is the Head Development Pattern Maker and Associate Technical Designer for 2253 Apparel Inc., for brands Liverpool Jeans, Rawan, Revery, and Celebrity Pink USA.

Before FIDM, Justin had developed an interest in pursuing a career in fashion, and it wasn’t long before he came to the realization that it was pattern making and construction that intrigued him the most.

As a student, Justin’s favorite class was Technical Design. “Fit is everything,” he said.

He explained to the students how important it is to know your fabrics, because the level of stretch affects fit. At his current position at 2253 Apparel, he is responsible for coming up with all the specs and fit notes in order to make the proto.

When he graduated, his instructor, Estel Hahn, told him about a job opportunity. “To get in the door is the hardest part,” he said. “FIDM puts you at a great level to start.”

In six months time, he went from being an assistant to being the Head of Pattern Making. Now, he produces about 105 samples a week.

“FIDM teaches you that you can handle anything,” he said. “The workload is insane.”

The last bit of advice he had for the students was to get internships and network. His ultimate goal is to work in Europe for a luxury brand.
