Just Accepted Visual Communications Student is Following Her Dreams to FIDM

Name: Carly Quick

Age: 20

Hometown: Scottsdale, AZ

Previous College: I previously attended the University of Arizona for two years. I also had an internship this past summer in Los Angeles with an advertising/marketing agency called Media Storm. I worked directly with their digital team and worked on the accounts of Open Road Films and WGN America. I also got the opportunity to work under the Managing Director and her Media Planning and Broadcasting Buying teams.

FIDM Major: Visual Communications

FIDM Campus and Start Date: Los Angeles Campus, Fall of 2016

Admissions Advisor: Shirley McDonald

How did your advisor help with the process? Shirley went above and beyond throughout the whole admissions process. When I first met with her at the Orange County campus, she gave me all the information I could possibly need, and made me feel comfortable with my decision to transfer schools. I knew I could always call her at any time with any questions or concerns and she would have an answer. It has been amazing working with Shirley and I could not be more excited to work with her in the future.

Tell us a bit about yourself. I am a very active yet relaxed person. I enjoy traveling to new places, snowboarding, drawing and painting, and spending time with family and friends. I try to live in the moment and take advantage of my surroundings and get inspired by whatever they may be.

What are your proudest accomplishments so far? One of my proudest accomplishments thus far is making the initial decision to transfer schools. Throughout my past two years at the U of A, transferring to FIDM had always been something I really wanted to do, but never really thought I would actually go through it. Not to sound cliché, but this is the first time I am actually following one of my dreams, and I could not be more proud of myself for taking this huge step in my life.

What made FIDM right for you? FIDM essentially offered me the best opportunity to pursue my career in fashion along with the unique Visual Communications major. They offer their students an endless amount of resources and provide them with sets of skills that will help them pursue a career in the real world. Also, meeting my advisor Shirley, and seeing how much she believed in me, validated all my prior reasons why FIDM was the right school for me.

Describe your entrance project. My entrance project consisted of three different little projects. The first one challenged me to create anything that included just circles, squares, and triangles. The other two projects were to design an exterior window display and an interior store display. I really enjoyed how much freedom all three projects allowed me to have, and let me show my artistic side as well.

What are your career goals? Upon graduating from FIDM, my goals are to develop a career creating visual presentations for special events, or to be a successful personal stylist.

What do you expect to learn at FIDM? While at FIDM, I aspire to take my skills and knowledge to the next level while creating close relationships with my peers and industry professionals.
