Students Express Personality Through Color in Mobile Photography In-Class Lab Assignment
FIDM Instructor Shannon Cottrell led her Mobile Photography students in an in-class lab assignment to express their individual personalities through color gels. Students across majors worked with DSLR cameras and lighting kits to photograph each other as they learned new techniques for portrait photography.
“This shoot unfolded very organically as the students were experimenting with different lighting and tools,” said Shannon Cottrell. “As a class, we decided this could be an interesting theme if we had different students photographed in the same setting, but each of them chose a color gel that represented their personality or mood that day.”
The mobile photography course (VCOM 2130) challenges students to produce their own photographic art using mobile cameras. In the class, emphasis is placed on making the most out of the limitations and opportunities available with these cameras including lighting, locations, framing, and post production using Adobe software.
“I just love what the students created during lab time,” said instructor Shannon Cottrell.
