FIDM Grad Chriselle Lim is Helping Define 'Quarantine Culture' According to W Magazine

Merchandising & Marketing Graduate Chriselle Lim, who has amassed 1.2 million followers on Instagram and 1.3 million on TikTok, was named by W Magazine as one of the famous faces defining “quarantine culture.” The social media superstar and entrepreneur is featured on her own digital video cover of the magazine as her internet famous, tongue-in-cheek character “Rich Mom,” alongside Naomi Campbell, Christian Siriano, Alison Roman, Bowen Yang, Ciara, and Charli XCX, among others.

Although Chriselle has been a popular influencer for a decade and runs three different companies, TikTok is where she’s really shined. In three short months on the platform, she hit one million followers. She recently wrote: “Proof that you don’t have to be young or know how to dance to be successful on TikTok! Just have fun!” On the app, known for its short-form mobile videos, Chriselle shares humorous clips such as “How to Look Rich in Your Sweats” and “Your Rich Mom’s Ultimate Guide to Staying Fashionably Fit.”

After being honored by W Magazine for lifting people’s spirits during this difficult time, she said: “To think that YOUR RICH MOM (aka my alter ego aka a fictional but kind of a real character) that started off as a joke has brought so much joy and laughter to people during this time is something I never would’ve imagined. I’m so thankful that I have a platform that can entertain, educate, and inspire so many of you and put you guys in good spirits during this time.”  ⠀

In the Q&A with the magazine, Chriselle explained that Rich Mom was born during Paris Fashion Week. “It can be a little obnoxious at times, but I think most people know that I’m acting,” she said. “It’s almost an escape for people to laugh at. I get so many people DMing me and sending me messages being like, ‘Your TikTok is the only reason why I’m laughing right now.’ That brings me a lot of joy and purpose for what I do, because this is a scary time. If I could just add a little bit of a fun escape for people, I feel like I am doing my job.”
