Beauty Students are Hands-On at Home

When education shifted online in the spring, instructors got creative to ensure their students didn’t miss out on the real-world projects FIDM is known for. For second-year Beauty Marketing & Product Development Students taking Fundamentals of Fragrance and Fundamentals of Cosmetics courses, that meant receiving two clever kits that would allow them to be hands-on at home.

In the Fundamentals of Fragrance class, students are making a fragrance sample from the oils they receive and mailing it to their instructor, Sarah Horowitz-Thran, thanks to a self-addressed, stamped envelope that was included in the kit. Students are also evaluating various fragrances via samples included in the kit and giving their feedback.

For Caitlin Woo Nobles' Fundamentals of Cosmetics class, students were sent samples of products in the same categories, such as eyeshadow, foundation, and lipstick, which they will evaluate to compare different aspects such as texture, color, application, drag, et cetera, similar to the way the beauty industry does for batch testing.
