FIDM/DECA Alumna Janice Morrison To Launch Business This Year
Janice Morrison graduated from FIDM in 2015 with her Apparel Industry Management degree. She was the president of her DECA club in high school, and won first place in a regional marketing competition during her first year. She now lives in New York and plans to launch her own online vintage store and personal shopping service by the end of 2017.
Tell us about your FIDM DECA Scholarship? DECA is the only reason I knew about FIDM. My marketing teacher encouraged me to join DECA. She then introduced me to the connection between FIDM and DECA. My FIDM DECA Scholarship was extremely helpful in offsetting some of the expenses of moving from New Jersey to California to attend FIDM.
How did you decide on your major? I love fashion but I also have a strong attraction to business. Based on my skills and interests, I decided to study Apparel Industry Management.
Tell us a little about yourself: I am Jamaican. I was raised in New Jersey and I currently live in New York. I am a fun loving, free spirited and creative individual. I have a great love for history and vintage fashion, and I am currently working on launching my online vintage store and personal vintage shopping service. My goal is to have it up and fully running by the end of 2017.
Right now, I'm working at W29 Showroom in Midtown Manhattan. As the showroom assistant, I act as a liaison between the buyers and the owner of the showroom. I also work with celebrity stylists in pulling pieces for photo shoots, red carpets, and events.
How do you feel FIDM prepared you? I think the various internships I had while attending FIDM have enabled me to have a competitive edge in my field, along with my knowledge of design and the business aspect of the fashion industry.
Any advice for a DECA student thinking about applying to FIDM? Be mindful of the marketing/business skills and knowledge you will attain during DECA as it will work to your benefit.
