Saint Laurent Hosts Menswear Show in Malibu

The iconic French house is the latest global fashion brand to pick Los Angeles for an extravaganza runway event.

The spring and summer 2020 men’s collection show was held at Malibu’s Paradise Cove with celebrity guests such as Keanu Reeves (the current face of YSL), Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth, Salma Hayek Pinault, Laura Dern, and Lakeith Stanfield in attendance. Creative director Anthony Vaccarello was inspired by rockers Serge Gainsbourg and Mick Jagger, creating a boho British-rocker vibe.

In addition to the signature black looks Saint Laurent is revered for, there were some all-white outfits and a few pops of color. Form-fitting leather and velvet trousers were featured throughout the presentation, along with skinny ties, marching band jackets, and Western-style straw hats reminiscent of cowboys.

Loose-fitting styles included kimono jackets, gauzy shirts, fringed capes, and duster-length velvet vests were shown along with harem pants in a range of styles, accessorized with oversize leather belt buckles. Memorable looks included a trench coat paired with cutoff denim shorts and a 1970s-style belted suede safari jacket.

The Los Angeles Times said: "By staging his spring and summer 2020 menswear show literally as close as possible to the western edge of the contiguous United States — in a place called Paradise Cove, no less — Vaccarello chose the symbolic home of the rocker/bohemian/gender-fluid cowboy, the rare place where it’s possible to be your true self — without having to be Mick Jagger first."

Vaccarello originally planned to show the collection in Marrakech, "but had decided that in fact LA felt like a new version of that city, with a similar sense of relaxed spirit in the way that people approached clothes." This was the second Saint Laurent runway event in recent years. Former creative director Hedi Slimane showed the autumn/winter 2016 men’s collection at the Palladium in Hollywood.
