FIDM Grad Sebastian Gunawan is One of Indonesia's Top Designers

Driven by a desire to make women look their most beautiful, Sebastian Gunawan expands his fashion empire in his native Indonesia and beyond.

Since he was a young boy, designer Sebastian Gunawan has been inspired by the women around him. Born to a tight-knit family with four brothers and two sisters, his interest in fashion was sparked by his mother's elegant style and natural flair for dressing. As a child, Sebastian learned he had a talent for fashion illustration. He nurtured his hobby by studying fashion locally and then enrolled at FIDM in Los Angeles where he studied Fashion Design as an International Student. 

Hollywood glamour became a focal point for Sebastian, who often incorporates beads, crystals, sequins, and semiprecious stones into his high fashion, couture-style gowns. While studying in Italy, he met his wife and creative partner, Cristina Panarese. The couple returned to Jakarta, Indonesia to launched his self-titled line, Sebastian Gunawan, in 1992. That same year, he represented Indonesia at the prestigious Young Fashion Designers Contest. His distinctive style was later recognized internationally when he received the First Award at the International Apparel Federation World Young Designer Award 2004, in Barcelona, Spain. 

Sebastian continues to grow his presence as one of Indonesia's most famed designers with the launch of two ready to wear lines, SEBASTIANred and VOTUM, and a bridal collection, SEBASTIANsposa. His glamorous creations are carried at prominent retailers throughout Indonesia and in Dubai, as well as in his five retail stores in Jakarta. He continues to offer bespoke design to a coterie of international and influential women for red carpet events, weddings, movie premieres, and other special events.
