DEBUT Grad Tomy Huang Opens 212° FUN Streetwear Popup on Melrose

Alumnus Tomy Huang has opened a “future home” themed popup on Melrose for his luxury streetwear brand 212° FUN. Bringing attention to global warming, the store is designed with silver insulation materials which also highlights his product designed with metal trim.

Customers can find t-shirts, shorts, hoodies, jeans, jackets, accessories, and in-store exclusive drops. Located at 7262 Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, the popup hours are 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday, until it closes on August 25th.

“Global warming is becoming one of the toughest issues we are facing today,” Tomy Huang said, “so we wanted to create a space that looks like a very futuristic home—we are trying our best to remind customers to pay more attention to the environment, otherwise we will end up living at homes built with insulation materials.”

“The whole store is silver in color which matches our metal pieces that we used on our clothing. The whole vibe is silver and very futuristic which is a perfect match for our clothing. Since our products contains many different neon color elements, we also decorated with a lot of LED lights and black lights to highlight our store’s night shopping atmosphere.”

His brand, established in May 2018, is named after the boiling point for water.

“212° symbolizes maximization,” he explains. “FUN represents our products’ interesting and functional character. Each product is individually handmade in Los Angeles. Through functionality, we aim to reach the highest point of fun—just like boiling water. 212° FUN makes you different.”

The popup was also designed with Instagram in mind. “There are many spots where customers can take super cool photos,” he said. “We also have a little showroom in the back, and for customers who are interested in the process of how our clothing is made we can make clothes in front of them. In order to give the best shopping experience for our customers, we even imported a very popular game machine from China. Customers can enjoy the process of playing the game and they might actually win some gifts.”

Tomy graduated in 2016 with his Advanced Study Fashion Design degree from FIDM, and participated in the DEBUT Runway Show. He came to FIDM with a fashion design degree from ESMOD in Beijing. He then worked as a patternmaker for NE-TIGER, a top luxury couture brand in China, and as a creative designer and product director for various fashion brands.

212° FUN was established in May 2018. He said his fan base is ages 16 to 35, and likes high quality, functional streetwear.
