From boutique hotels and restaurants to offices, community areas, and private homes, Interior Designers create the spaces where we live, work, and play. Learn to think first as a designer, then get hands-on experience developing skills that will help you succeed as a working professional in this incredibly exciting field.

What Our Students Learn
In our program students learn the skills to:

  • Navigate all aspects of the design process.
  • Apply elements and principles of design.
  • Communicate and critically reason.
  • Research historical influences and current trends.
  • Create visuals including sketches, floor plans, and rendered presentation drawings.
  • Utilize state-of-the-industry technology to produce documentation and visuals.
  • Create functionally appropriate, aesthetically pleasing, and safe environments.
  • Conduct business in a professional and ethical manner.

Interior Design
FIDM Interior Design Students have designed Downtown Los Angeles lofts, helped to renovate the Boys & Girls Club of Venice, and designed unique playhouses that were auctioned off for Orange County's Project Playhouse, which benefits homeless families.

Students participate in projects such as "Chairing Styles," an exciting collaboration between Interior Design, Fashion Design, and Textile Design students and major companies such as Marimekko and Cotton, Inc.

Grad Meg Joannides Kalhammer designed a 10,000 sq ft home featured in House & Garden. The home belongs to her client Kevin Bright, best known for being the producer of the hit TV show Friends.

A Closer Look

The Interior Design Program combines theoretical elements of interior design with practical creative approaches to the solution of functional and aesthetic design problems in the living, working, and recreational human environment. Competencies developed by the program include architectural drafting, CAD illustration and graphic presentation skills, and design proficiency. Students will also develop a working knowledge of the materials, resources, and business procedures pertaining to the Interior Design profession.
