DEBUT Grad is Finalist in Supima Design Competition
Sakura Mizutani, a recent graduate of FIDM’s Advanced Fashion Design program, is one of six national finalists who will compete in the 13th Annual Supima Cotton Design Competition. Featuring designers from the top fashion schools in the U.S., the competition tasks finalists with creating capsule collections using Supima cotton fabrics. Fashion designer Bibhu Mohapatra will return for the sixth time to serve as a mentor to the designers.
The event, which will take place on Instagram Live on September 10, 2020, will be hosted by Law Roach, the celebrity stylist known for working with Zendaya and Kerry Washington. The winner of the competition will receive a $10,000 cash prize and exposure to fashion press, industry executives, and social media influencers. Supima still plans to present a piece from each of the finalists’ collection during Paris Fashion Week as part of the Supima Design Lab, also in a digital format.
The design competition was recently covered on Vogue.com. The article noted that Sakura, who was raised in Japan, “looked to nature, channeling ideas about the four seasons into the sculptural blouses and fabric flowers” for her collection. Sakura has said that her desire to become a fashion designer stemmed from the confidence she received wearing her favorite clothing and knowing that she wanted to share that sense of confidence and good feelings with others through her designs.
