Susan Geluz

Artist/designer Susan Geluz has been exploring various art media since she was 15. After earning her BFA in Painting, she is currently studying architecture and teaching a wide range of FIDM courses: Color and Design Theory, Fashion Sketching, and Surveys of Western Art to name a few. She is one of FIDM’s most popular teachers.

Describe a favorite class project.
For my Furniture Construction and Design class each student was tasked with designing a companion piece for Thos. Moser Lolling Chair and Ottoman. The class went from identifying the client, sketching ideas, and construction documents to full design concepts including scale models.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at FIDM?
A student remarked just yesterday that the classes are like having a conversation. The class is no longer just a series of critiques; instead we share ideas.

Do you have a teaching philosophy?
I teach the design process—how you get from idea to a product that may be a garment, a piece of furniture, a room design or a visual design concept.

Susan Geluz is an Outstanding Faculty Award winner, an award given by the student body to outstanding faculty members.
