Describe a favorite class project:
In Thesis, my student Heather Robinson created an Historical Preservation project that, through the sophisticated materiality and detailing, showed that there is always room for whimsy, joy and levity in Interior Design. It was such a high point to guide her and help to curate her look and aesthetic.
Do you have a particular style or philosophy about teaching?
Yes. Keep a balance, but ALWAYS use real world examples, situations and problem solving along with the academics in the classroom. I feel that students grasp concept and knowledge when you make relatable to their day-to-day life/work lives.
Do you have a favorite memory teaching at FIDM?
Attending my first FIDM DEBUT Runway Show—I was blown away by the professionalism of both the production and the work; it really was spectacular and a little emotional.
What do you enjoy most about teaching at FIDM?
The students. They are interested, interesting, and engaged.
Mark Lewison is an Outstanding Faculty Award Winner, an award given by the student body to outstanding faculty members.
