One Day Summer Session: Turning Trends into Innovative Beauty Products

The Turning Trends into Innovative Beauty Products session is structured with two dedicated 3-hour hands-on workshops led by FIDM Instructors who are leaders at top Los Angeles indie beauty brands.

Designed to simulate the FIDM classroom experience, this session takes students through the process of product conceptualization to creation. Students learn to identify the next product trend and then go through the process of turning that trend into a viable, innovative product.

Morning Session: Trends, Consumer Behavior, and Branding
Part 1: Instructor lecture on spotting future trends.
Working in groups, students identify what’s going to be hot in the category of their choice in Spring/Summer 2023.

Part 2: Instructor lecture on consumer behavior and branding.
Working in the same groups, the teams develop a consumer target. They then create a brand voice, brand story, and brand name that will appeal to that target. Finally, they conduct a competitive analysis to substantiate the unique reason for being.

Afternoon Session: Positioning, Formulations, and Ingredient Stories
Part 3: Instructor lecture on product positioning, formulations, and ingredient stories.
Given a few ingredient ideas as inspiration, teams are tasked with creating formula and 1-3 product concepts. Using the competitive data, teams determine pricing and placement in the market. Lastly, they name the products and determine final primary and secondary packaging.

Part 4: Team presentations and voting.
Teams pitch their ideas to a team of judges, and the winning team members each receive a gift bag of beauty products.
