Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl:

Hi! I am totally confused because I want to actually fit in with the rest of the girls in my class, but I dont feel like my outfits really fit that. I want to look like a girl, and feel pretty, but not look too sexy. Do you have any suggestions?

Kaitlyn

Dear Kaitlyn:

Great question! We all want to fit in, don't we? I think the first thing to do is figure out exactly what your current style is and then incorporate elements of what you want to look like (in this case you've said girly but not too sexy). Since you want to fit in with the rest of the girls in your class, find out where they shop, then look for items in those stores that you would be comfortable wearing (not necessarily the exact things the other girls are wearing, but something that balances your personal style with the new look you desire).

To be girly but not too sexy, look for styles that show off your favorite feature but in a modest way. For example, if you've got great shoulders show them off with tank tops or strapless tops and dresses, but tone down the rest of your look by avoiding skirts that are too tight or short or pants that have a super-low rise or fit too snugly. Or if you're really proud of your small waistline, show it off with a fabulous wide belt instead of baring your midriff. Here are some girly looks to inspire you (and none of them are too sexy!):

Looking more girly could also be as simple as wearing pretty accessories with your current look, or maybe adding a dash of makeup. If you're a jeans and tee shirt kind of girl, add high heels or fabulous jewelry to the look to make it more feminine. A great place to find great accessories (and my new favorite shop!) is For Love 21 by Forever 21: http://www.forever21.com/forlove21/default.asp

The most important thing to remember is that, no matter what you put on, you must be comfortable. If you aren't comfortable in what you're wearing you won't be as confident or feel as pretty. Keep that in mind as you're shopping and avoid buying things simply because the other girls in your class have something similar. Yes you want to fit in, but you also want amazing, fabulous, spectacular YOU to shine through, right?

Thank you so much for writing, and come back anytime you have style questions. Have an amazing summer!

xoxo,
