Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl:

How do I put together a vintage look? I can’t seem to get my outfits to coordinate.

Leisha

Dear Leisha:

It seems that coordinating outfits is always tricky, whether they’re new or vintage! When you’re putting together a look with vintage items especially, sometimes, as the saying goes, “less is more.” Try mixing just one vintage item in with simple modern clothes—say, just a vintage jacket, shirt, or skirt. An up-to-date cotton tank or camisole top, or a sweater for winter, can look great with a vintage mini and a denim jacket. A vintage leather jacket can look great with your best jeans. That way the vintage pieces don't compete with each other for attention and end up looking costume-y. Wearing just one allows it to stand out.

Sincerely,
