Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

I’m interested in fashion and being a Fashion Designer, but I can’t draw all that well and I don’t like to sew. Is there any hope for me to be in the fashion world?

Sarah

Dear Sarah:

Yikes! There definitely is hope for you in the fabulous world of fashion! I’m glad you e-mailed me this question because it’s so common for those with a passion for fashion to overlook the many exciting careers available beyond just the design element. The fashion industry is a huge, worldwide industry, and the great news is that there are zillions of creative careers in it that don’t require any drawing or sewing at all. For instance, a Buyer decides what the rest of us will be buying each season. There’s travel to out-of-town markets to purchase new merchandise for the store, website, or catalog. Trend Analyst is the ultimate trend-tracking position! You’d keep current on forward directions for color, style, and silhouette. Stylists create the overall look of fashion shows, photos, and videos, and glamorize celebrities for gala events. As an Apparel Business Owner, you’d oversee every part of your own business: merchandising, production, and marketing of the line.

How to get launched into these great careers? In just two years, FIDM majors such as Merchandise Marketing, Visual Communications, Apparel Manufacturing Management, and Merchandise Product Development can have you doing what you love every day, no sketching or sewing required. More information about careers and FIDM majors is available on the FIDM website at www.fidm.edu. While you’re there, be sure and take our fun Career Dreamscapes quiz. It’s another great way to find out what might be your best career"fit."(The quiz is in the Admissions section.)

Keep visualizing yourself in a fashion career and you can make it happen!

Sincerely, Fashion Girl
