Sonia Rykiel Dies: Designer Founded Chic French Knitwear Brand

August 29, 2016

Iconoclastic French knitwear designer Sonia Rykiel's label went from being a small family store on the left bank in the '60s to a 21st century global brand by always designing for the kind of women (and men) who wanted to live life as she did—chic and stylish without being stuffy. She will be remembered for two major fashion contributions—the poorboy sweater and soft knit maternity wear that hugged the torso rather than hiding it under a tent. The poorboy design—ribbed pullover sweaters with high armholes that made shoulders seem smaller and torsos narrower—was a fad adopted by style icons like Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy before becoming a mass market classic.
