Interior Design Student Wins Two New Scholarships

Name: Kristina Roach

MajorInterior Design, Bachelor of Arts Program

Tell us about the scholarships you were recently awarded. The scholarships I won are from NEWH The Hospitality Network. The first one is a general scholarship from the organization for $1,700. I also received an independent memorial scholarship called the Bob Young award for $2,000. I attended the NEWH Scholarship Gala to accept these on stage. For the first one, all recipients were called up on stage (there were about 20 of us.) For the Bob Young award I was the only recipient and was asked to stay on stage while Bob Young's wife spoke about him, introduced the scholarship in his honor, and then she and their grandson handed me the award.

After receiving your Associate of Arts degree in Interior Design from FIDM, what made you decide to get your Bachelor of Arts? After my AA program at FIDM, I decided it was best to transfer to a university to complete a Bachelor's program, but after transferring I soon learned the level of education was nowhere near what I learned at FIDM. Once I heard that FIDM was offering a Bachelor's for Interior Design, I jumped at the opportunity to come back. The atmosphere here, being surrounding by such creative minds, is truly inspiring.

When are you expected to graduate? The first class of Bachelor students for Interior Design is due to graduate Spring of 2017.

What are your ultimate career goals? I have always envisioned myself doing residential design, working at a small residential design firm or eventually starting my own. Pure bliss to me is turning a house into a home. The more I explore the world of interior design, the more that I realize how fascinating every aspect of it can be and I want to keep discovering the beauty.
