Cassidy Sobey To Intern at Ungaro in Paris This Summer
Cassidy Sobey was born and raised in Northern California where she attended Carlmont High School and played varsity tennis all four years. She is completing her first year at FIDM in the Apparel Industry Management program and has just been accepted for a paid summer internship in PR at Ungaro in Paris. We caught up with her to learn more.
Tell us about your upcoming internship at Ungaro in Paris: In my paid internship at Ungaro, I am working in the Commercial Department and the Press Office. My main job is being an assistant during the Spring-Summer 2018 collections and helping out with their latest fashion show. I will be working about 35 hours per week, so this will be a perfect time for me to get used to a full time job. I will be staying in Paris for the majority of the summer (maybe not in August because that is when summer break is in Paris), which I am very excited for.
Tell us a little about yourself: I am originally from a town called San Carlos in California (about 20 minutes south of San Francisco) and I have grown up in California my whole life. I have always enjoyed playing sports, mainly tennis and softball, as well as doing a little bit of art (loved splattering paint on a canvas). I always did my best in high school, whether it was taking AP/advanced classes or playing my best on the tennis court. (I was on varsity tennis for all four years of high school.) I have always been into clothes and shopping at a young age (believe me, you can ask my parents), but I figured out that I wanted to do a career in fashion when I was about a freshman in high school. I joined a club at Nordstrom called B.P. Fashion Board and from there have worked at Nordstrom as a sales associate (not only to put on my resumé but also to buy more clothes) to get more involved in the fashion industry.
What is one of your proudest accomplishments? One of my proudest accomplishments has nothing to do with fashion actually. It is when I made my high school's varsity tennis team freshman year and played on it for all four years of high school. The reason why is because I had to work hard as a freshman to be one of the top ten players and I did so by going to a new coach and playing tennis almost year round for about two and a half years. I saw my major improvements throughout the years and was incredibly happy with the results. Even though I stopped training as hard my last few years, those skills played over and I still enjoy playing the game.
How did you hear about FIDM and what made you decide to go here? I originally heard about FIDM from my mom. She was at a college fair with my brother looking for colleges and she saw FIDM and thought that it could be a potential school that I could go to. What ultimately made me decide to go to FIDM was the major and the location. Since I am a California girl, born and raised, I really liked the idea of living in LA (even though I am closer to the SF campus). The major Apparel Industry Managementreally stood out to me in that it teaches students how to run their own fashion company as well as every aspect of the fashion industry, which is exactly what I wanted in a major. Plus, every time I went to an open house or went to one of FIDM's events, everyone was very friendly and I felt like I could really fit into the school.
How did you choose your major? I chose my major Apparel Industry Management because one day I would like the open my own fashion company or potentially run an already existing fashion company. This major seemed like the right fit for me and I am so far really enjoying it.
What are your career goals and how is FIDM helping you get there? My career goals in the future are to start out managing an already existing and successful fashion company just so that I can gain some experience before running my own fashion company. I also want to connect with other fashion companies to do collaborations and work with charities/organizations to help give back to people around the world. FIDM is helping me get there by teaching me the tools and skills in order to reach my goals and providing well qualified and connective teachers to teach me.
What advice do you have for someone thinking about going to FIDM? My advice that I would give to someone thinking about attending FIDM is to be open to the many options that FIDM provides whether it is their majors, clubs, and programs that FIDM offers and figure out where you best fit and to not be afraid to pursue your dream career. If you work hard, you will get to where you want to go.
Anything else you’d like to share? Coming to FIDM has not only been an educational experience, but also a social experience in that you meet people from all over the world with similar ideals as you when it comes to careers. The people that I have met, whether through classes, housing, or social events, have made my FIDM experience so much better than I could have thought. That is one perk of FIDM that is probably not mentioned as much, but one that should be greatly noted.
