"The Assassination of Gianni Versace" Costume Designers Did Research at FIDM

InStyle is reporting on the costumes from the anticipated FX show, American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, and their connection to FIDM.

Since the famed fashion house was not involved with the project, costume designers Lou Eyrich and Allison Leach turned to vintage dealers and resellers online to buy Versace pieces from past collections.

“We knew we were going to be recreating actual Versace garments, so we did research at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising here in L.A.,” Leach told InStyle. “They have one of the largest Versace collections in the country. In this case, it was researching not only photos and videos and magazines but actually looking at the real clothes and their construction and then recreating that."

The show, from creator Ryan Murphy, premieres on January 17, 2018 at 10:00 p.m. and explores the shocking murder of designer Gianni Versace (played by Edgar Ramirez) in 1997. Penélope Cruz plays his sister and successor, Donatella Versace, while Darren Criss offers a "bone-chilling portrayal" of serial killer Andrew Cunanan. Ricky Martin is also part of the cast, playing Gianni Versace's lover, Antonio D'Amico.
