Apparel Technical Design Grad Addison Lipson Lands Position at Revolve

Addison Lipson graduated in June with her Bachelor's in Apparel Technical Design and is now working as an Assistant Technical Designer at Revolve.

FIDM Major: A.A. in Merchandise Product Development; B.S. in Apparel Technical Design

FIDM Grad Year: June 2017

Company: Revolve

Title: Assistant Technical Designer

Tell us a little about yourself: I am from Scottsdale, Arizona, and moved to Los Angeles after high school to pursue a career in the fashion industry. Other than fashion, I love miniature poodles, watching Real Housewives, and sleeping.

Where are you working? I work at Revolve as an assistant technical designer for their private label brands. We help to make sure the garment fits right and looks good for the customer while working with the designers to execute their vision. As an assistant, I take notes in fit sessions, send out fit comments, and spec garments.

How do you feel FIDM prepared you for what you are doing now? FIDM prepared me a lot for the job I have now. Not only in my skills but also how to handle myself out in the industry. By having industry professionals as teachers, FIDM students get to learn from people that are actually in the business and know what the industry is looking for.

How did you decide on your major? I decided on my major because it was new and I wanted to go into a newer field and to be one of the first people with a Technical Design degree from FIDM. I also enjoy technical design and being a part of the creative process, but not being responsible for having the creativity.

Looking back, which classes at FIDM were most valuable to you? Pattern making classes. Pattern making knowledge is so important in technical design!

Any advice for current FIDM Students? Intern. Intern. Intern!!! Interning is so important. Always say yes to any opportunity and don’t be afraid to try different things in the industry. My internships and jobs ranged from graphic design, product development, and technical design before I decided what path I wanted to take. Try to build your resume while you are in school so you have something to bring to the table when you are looking for your first job.

What is your biggest goal right now? My biggest goal right now is to excel at my new job, bond with my team, and learn as much as I can while I am there!

Anything else you’d like to share?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there in the world and try new things to find out what is right for you. Work hard but try to enjoy yourself while you are in school because it is one of the best times of your life!
