Student Marty McKenna Preps Design Presentation For Red Bull

Marty McKenna was hand selected this quarter to participate in the Red Bull x FIDM collaboration. Red Bull, whose North American headquarters are located in Santa Monica, is challenging FIDM Students to redesign their Red Bull Wings Team Los Angeles apparel collection and an undercover sampling bag. The students will present their designs to Red Bull this month and a celebratory launch event is scheduled for October. Marty has his degree in Merchandise Product Development degree and is now studying in the International Manufacturing & Product Development (IMPD) program, on track to graduate in March 2019.

What about the Red Bull Challenge are you most looking forward to? For the Red Bull Challenge, I am most looking forward to my final presentation. As a fan of Red Bull, it is such an incredible opportunity to present my own ideas to a company I enjoy, especially when they are looking to put designs into production.

What did you learn at the Red Bull presentations that is going to help you in your designs? At the presentation, I learned a lot more about the brand and what their overall concept is. It really helped me get a better idea of the Red Bull aesthetic and how it should be portrayed.

What attracted you to the IMPD program? What interests me most about the IMPD program is that it gives students the opportunity to use their skills in the industry from the standpoint of a major company. It's very rare to work with such an established brand as a student in the way FIDM provides.

What are your career goals and how is FIDM helping you get there? My end career goal is to have my own apparel distribution company. Prior to that, I plan on gaining more experience in product development, sourcing, and technical design. FIDM is helping me step toward those goals by not only teaching me the skills, but they are also giving me the hands-on, industry related experience as a student.
