Just Accepted Social Media Student Is Former Pro Basketball Player

Arkansas native, David Cline, had an exciting career as a professional basketball player in Germany prior to coming to FIDM. With a passion for street style and a desire to understand the role of Social Media in fashion and branding, he's ready to start a new chapter.

Hometown: Rogers, AR

Previous Work: Pro Basketball Player in Germany

FIDM Major: Social Media

FIDM Campus and Start Date: LA Campus, Fall 2016

Admissions Advisor: Susan Pope

How did your advisor help with the process? Susan was instrumental in guiding me through the admissions process at FIDM; we had constant communication throughout. She was readily available for me to ask questions concerning my future studies or even to chat about Kobe dropping 60 points in his final game as a Laker. Susan played an important role in me choosing FIDM and I will keep her in my favorites for future guidance.

Tell us a bit about yourself. The majority of my life has been spent playing the sport with a ball and a hoop. Aside from basketball, I’m captivated with photography and enjoy capturing everyday outfits on the streets. That’s where fashion lives for me. It’s interesting to see what unique styles people will come up with. I’m heavily influenced by The Sartorialist and fashion blogs alike. I rarely get to go camping, but when I do I prefer it in the winter. I especially enjoy the times I can spend with friends and I’m always down for something a bit bizarre including but not limited to, freestyle rapping and cliff jumping.

What are your proudest accomplishments so far? Signing a contract to play basketball professionally in Europe. It was then that I truly realized the value of the hard work and rigorous training that I had put myself through. I was able to live in Europe for two years all the while traveling and playing the sport I love. For me, that was the pinnacle of my basketball career.

What made FIDM right for you? I’ve known about FIDM since I was a kid, way before I had a serious interest in fashion. Their reputation for being one of the best fashion colleges is complemented by their drive to see students influence the world creatively through art and style. FIDM gives you a chance to practice with real components while having your work critiqued as to better prepare you for this massive industry.

Describe your entrance project. I wrote my project from the perspective of the social media director of a European brand. I focused on four trends from the 90s that everyone should be wearing now. As the one in charge of marketing for the brand, I chose a mix witty contemporary tag lines that would drawn in a select demographic.

What are your career goals? I’m interesting in tapping into the vast market that LA has and learn from other creative thinkers. Ideally, I want to use social media as a valid tool to connect and monitor traffic with a variety of demographics. Upon graduation at FIDM, I see myself as the director of social media for a brand, artist, or magazine. I envision myself working behind the scenes, but also interacting face-to-face. I look forward to continuing my passion for shooting fashion photography and blending the two. I want to have fun with it while using my unique perspective to influence people as well help them find the style that they love.

What do you expect to learn at FIDM? I expect to gain more of an insight into the industry of fashion and to further understand the role social media plays in the ever-evolving world of branding.
