Bachelor's Student Zoya Sultan Hired at Glyder Apparel
A current student in the Bachelor’s of Science Business Management program, Zoya Sultan was hired as an Assistant Designer at Glyder Apparel after learning of the opportunity from FIDM Alumna Miranda Mathews. Zoya holds two FIDM degrees, an A.A. in Merchandise Product Development and an Advanced A.A. in International Merchandising and Product Development (IMPD).
How did you find out about the position at Glyder Apparel? Hahn, one of my FIDM instructors, keeps in touch with her former students and regularly forwards their job postings. FIDM Alumna Miranda Mathews sent the posting about the position at Glyder Apparel to Hahn. When I saw that the company was located in OC and they were looking for someone local, I was extremely excited to apply and now I'm extremely grateful to be working there. As an Assistant Designer, every day is different but it can range from sketching to print development to tagging samples.
Tell us a little about yourself: I'm originally from SoCal, born and raised! I knew I wanted to be in the fashion industry ever since the 6th grade and that's when I first started researching FIDM. So far I've completed my A.A. in Product Development and an Advanced A.A. in International Merchandising and Product Development and now I'm onto my Bachelor’s at FIDM. In my free time—when I'm not working or in school—I like to choreograph and volunteer.
How do you feel FIDM prepared you for what you are doing now? FIDM has provided me with a solid foundation for success at my job. I was given the tools to exceed in a variety of skills from sketching to developing prints to color matching. IMPD especially equipped me with even more tools and enhanced the skills I developed in my A.A. program.
Tell us about your experience in the Business Management program: It is completely different from my past two programs because it is definitely more business oriented, but I like the change. Working and going to school at the same time can be overwhelming at times, especially during midterms and finals, but it is teaching me time management and keeping me from procrastinating. I’m applying at work what I'm learning at school.
What is your biggest goal right now? My biggest goal right now is to graduate on time and work extremely hard to succeed at my job. Balancing the two has been a learning process and I'm grateful that it's been working out well.
Anything else you’d like to share? To anyone debating if they should work and go to school at the same time: it may seem intimidating, but you can do it! Just stay focused and all will fall into place!
