Design B.A. Grad Is Celebrity Event Producer

Name: Akansha Mirchandani

Hometown: Mumbai, India

Job Title: Freelance Event Producer

How did you first hear about FIDM? I first heard about FIDM while watching the television show The Hills. Shortly after, when I visited LA, I decided to check out the FIDM campus along with a few other art schools in LA. FIDM just clicked from me, from the second I got there I knew it was the school for me. Six months after my first visit I packed my bags and moved to LA.

What led you to the new Design B.A. program? After I received my A.A. in Visual Communications from FIDM, I was still a little confused about what I wanted to do long term. I knew I wanted to design, and I knew I didn't want to design clothing. When I heard FIDM had a Design Program that essentially lets you curate what you want to specialize in, I jumped on the opportunity and applied. I was given the opportunity to curate a show for all the students in my program at the FIDM Museum & Galleries, which really broadened my horizons and inspired me to go more installation-based or experiential with my work.

Tell us about your day-to-day responsibilities. I am currently a Freelance Event Producer and working on establishing my own event production and design company. I typically coordinate an event from start to finish and specialize in the design and decor of the event, including product and vendor sourcing, menu creation, staff management, etc. Most of my clientele has been from the Hollywood scene or celebrities in the music business, but I'm hoping to expand to luxury fashion over the next few years.

How do you feel FIDM has helped prepare you for your career? FIDM really helped me develop my process as a designer, and I find myself still going back to tricks and processes I learned early on. My A.A. program helped me utilize my window design and set design skills to create installations and experiential events. My B.A. gave me the opportunity to work with eight different designers, aka eight different clients. It was challenging to bring eight different aesthetics together to flow well together in one room and great practice runs for the real world.
