4 Recent Internships You Need to Know About

With access to an impressive network of thousands of employers nationwide, Career Center Advisors work one-on-one with students to help find the right internship, giving them a jumpstart on creating the career of their dreams.

For many of FIDM's degree programs, internships are built directly into the curriculum, making them an important part of the educational path. FIDM Students have access to more than 2,000 internships each year, at companies such as Alexander McQueen, Rachel Zoe, Mattel, Smashbox, Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, and more.

Here are 4 recent internships you'll want to know about:

Apparel Technical Design Student Jazz Cole is at Halston for her second internship: "Having the knowledge about pattern making, tech packs, fit, and design in general has allowed my supervisors to not have to explain certain things to me," Jazz says. "I know how to make a tech pack, so they don't have to explain to me how to do one, I can just do it. They don't have to explain what BOMs (bill of materials), POMs (points of measure), TOPs (top of production) are because I already know, so they give me a task and I just do it. I ask questions if there's something I'm not sure of, but for the most part, when they tell me to do something, I generally know how to do it."

Alyson Covington, a recent Merchandise Product Development Graduate, turned a temporary position at Paige Denim into a Design Assistant role. "FIDM gave me the knowledge and resources I needed to get a job in the industry. I really took advantage of the Career Center to get an internship every quarter," she explains. "Being a student at FIDM allowed me to get internships at some amazing companies like St. John Knits, Jonathan Simkhai, Halston, and Paige Denim. It’s important to treat your internships like a real job and work hard because they will notice and it could lead to a real job opportunity."

International Manufacturing & Product Development Graduate Anastasia Cunningham was one of 70 accepted applicants (out of 6,000) to receive an internship with Anthropologie at their headquarters in Philadelphia. "The campus is so amazing. All the buildings used to function as either gyms or workshops or storage for the Navy," she says. "We are not held up in some stuffy office; we are in an open concept work environment. Interns get their own desks and get to be creative in decorating it. My desk is pretty simple but mainly cause I spent my desk decorating time doting on the dog that sits next to me. Yes, URBN is dog friendly and even has a dog park."

Chigo Ikeme, an Apparel Technical Design Student, was recruited by Samsung for a one-year paid internship in their fashion sector. "I’m responsible for the development of new prints and fabrics per season. This includes creating and updating print line sheets, constant communication with our overseas mills, issuing sample POs, coordinating fabric inventory with the warehouse, researching textile trends, and sourcing fabrics for printing," Chigo explains. "We make prints for many notable companies including Macy’s, Kohl’s, and JC Penney, to name a few. The experience has been extremely valuable being that I’m passionate about the textile industry and my past experiences has really helped me excel in my internship."
